CMS strengthens its data protection practice

21/07/2017

CMS’ growing data protection practice has been strengthened by Damian Karwala, legal counsel with more than 12 years of experience in the field of data protection and new technologies law.

Since the beginning of his career, Damian Karwala has focused on legal issues related to the protection of personal data, cyber security, IT, e-commerce and digitalisation. While working for reputable law firms he advised key clients in the telecommunications, finance and insurance, pharmaceutical, new technologies and media sectors, including leading insurance companies and operators of major websites in Poland.

He has extensive experience in conducting data protection audits of compliance with legal requirements, as well as developing strategies for international transfers of personal data and data processing within capital groups (for instance for the purpose of conducting marketing or cross-selling activities). He has successfully represented clients before the Inspector General for the Protection of Personal Data (GIODO) and administrative courts. More recently, Damian has been focusing on providing advice on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), preparing clients for new legal requirements. Previously, as a legal expert of industry organizations, he also participated in consultative works on the wording of the GDPR.

In the international legal ranking Chambers Europe Damian was selected as an “Associate to watch” in the category of personal data protection in 2015- 2017. Before joining CMS, he worked at law firms such as Traple Konarski Podrecki and DLA Piper.

“Strengthening our practice is a response to the need of customers seeking support in relation to their new responsibilities with respect to the protection of personal data. We are dealing with more and more such projects, and due to a highly experienced lawyer joining our team we will be able to advise our clients on the most demanding projects.” – emphasizes Tomasz Koryzma, partner heading the IP/TMC Group at CMS.

In this year’s Ranking of Regulatory Law Firms by Polityka Insight magazine, CMS’ data protection practice was recognized as one of the leading practices on the Polish market. In the prestigious international Chambers Europe and Legal 500 rankings, our team was also recognized as the leader in Poland, which reflects the complexity of the legal advice offered by CMS and the reputation of its lawyers. CMS’ personal data protection practice operates within the TMIC team (Technology, Media, IT and Competition) headed by Tomasz Koryzma, partner and legal counsel recognized by Chambers & Partners as a leading lawyer in the data protection and new technologies law (Band 2 and Band 1).

In May 2017 CMS merged with Olswang, considered a leader in the new technologies sector, further strengthening CMS’ position in this area.
