CEE tax team ramps up with ABB engagement

Annual Review 2017-2018

June 2018

The pioneering Swedish technology company ABB Group recently entered into a three-year framework agreement with CMS Croatia for legal and tax support. This is also the basis for further negotiations and widening support for ABB in the region.

For example, CMS has already advised ABB Croatia on a permanent establishment status in Bosnia-Herzegovina and continues to support the locally-established branch office.

ABB works closely with utilities, transportation, industry and infrastructure companies in around 100 countries globally.

CMS Zagreb partner Tamara Jelić Kazić, who manages the ABB relationship across the region, explained:

We incorporated ABB in Bosnia as a branch of its Croatian entity, which is more tax efficient and less complex in regulatory terms than setting it up as a subsidiary company, for example.

Tamara Jelić Kazić added, “Clients can get very frustrated at the response times of some local law firms in CEE and our ability to respond quickly across all the jurisdictions our clients operate in – and across all practice areas – is a major selling point for us.”

Other clients we have recently advised on significant multijurisdictional tax matters in CEE include:

  • Colgate Palmolive, on general employment and employment-related tax matters (CMS Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia)
  • Swedish civil construction company Byggförvaltarna Europa, on the secondment of employees from selected countries to work in Sweden (CMS Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Slovenia).
