On 9 October 2006 the Frankfurt International Media Prize will be awarded for the first time by the Frankfurter PresseClub (FPC): The award ceremony will take place at Campus Westend before 500 guests from the fields of media, politics, business, sport and culture. With this prize, which will be awarded every two years, the FPC wishes to honour outstanding journalistic achievements in the areas of print journalism, TV, radio, online journalism and photography.
Entries from home and abroad were welcomed, awards will be made to contributions featuring topics from Frankfurt and the Rhine Main area.
The winner of the first prize receives EUR 10,000, the second prize EUR 7,000 and the third prize EUR 4,000. In addition, a prize for the best young journalist (a 3-month fully-financed scholarship) will be awarded and this year an (unfunded) special prize too.
Winners in 2006:
1st Prize: Eckhard Mieder and Joachim Wölcken (Hessian Broadcasting Corporation) for the TV documentary
"Der Bauch von Frankfurt – Die Geschichte der Großmarkthalle" ("Frankfurt's Stomach – the History of the Wholesale Market")
2nd Prize: Bernhard Borgeest (Focus) for the report on court proceedings
"Die Würde des Menschen ist unantastbar" ("Human dignity is inviolable")
3rd Prize: Corinna Tertel (Hessian Broadcasting Corporation) for the radio feature
"Ode an den Main" ("Ode to the Main")
Best Young Journalist Prize: Michael Wittershagen (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) for the report on the Frankfurter Berg
"So schlimm ist es hier schon lange nicht mehr" ("It's not as bad here anymore now")
Special Prize: Thomas Schernbeck and Volker Denkel (Hessian Broadcasting Corporation) for the online report
"Das Ende des Schweigens – Der Frankfurter Auschwitz-Prozess von 1963 – 1965" ("Breaking the Silence – The Ausschwitz Trials 1963 – 1965 in Frankfurt")
