Heinz-Joachim Freund is a competition law and state aid expert, advising and representing companies and banks. He acted as legal counsel for the European Commission in numerous antitrust proceedings at the Community courts. He also advises companies on corporate law, with the latter also being at the core of his notary practice.

Heinz-Joachim joined the predecessor firm of CMS in Frankfurt in 1984, became a partner in 1988 and headed the Brussel office from 1990 to 1998.
