Key employment issues to be aware of internationally

This edition of On your radar highlights how employment law can intersect with global politics and world events.

Brazil discuss the suspension of several labour laws following the state of public calamity called after severe flooding in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Several elections feature in other entries, with both the UK and Mexico commenting on employment law reform following the change in government in the UK, and the election of a new President in Mexico.

Protection against dismissal varies considerably across jurisdictions in relation to who is protected, the reasons for protection and severance payments that apply. The Peru team discuss a decision involving the dismissal of a person of trust where there is no entitlement to compensation. Portugal refer to a recent case involving the return of compensation for dismissal, and Belgium highlight new rules protecting employees from dismissal where they are undergoing infertility treatment.

The status of individuals working for digital platforms and the use of AI by employees is also covered, and will no doubt continue to feature in future editions as countries develop their approaches to the impact of technology in the workplace.
