Energy, climate and sustainability are high on today’s political agendas. Many municipalities, developers, investors and power companies have far-reaching ambitions in the area of sustainable area development. Sustainability, however, is a broad concept and not always easy to achieve. Sustainable area development demands an integrated approach, in which a balance must be found between ecological, economic and socio-cultural area values. Naturally, energy savings and sustainable building play a major role in achieving these aims.
The development of knowledge about sustainable area development is essential and still very much work in progress. CMS Derks Star Busmann is pleased to contribute to this debate, and that is why we are organizing a seminar on Sustainable Area Development on Monday 19 April 2010 at 3 pm at our office in Utrecht.
A multidisciplinary team of specialists in the area of property, administrative law, procurement law, building law and energy law will explain a number of aspects of sustainable area development which create opportunities but also impose limitations on achieving an genuinely sustainable form of area development.
During the first part of the seminar we will discuss the possibilities and impossibilities of making sustainable construction compulsory, tenders for sustainable area development and special spatial planning procedures (including the government projects procedure) involved in sustainable area development.
Based on questions raised in real-life situations, we will then go on to consider soil energy, a form of renewable energy supply that until recently has remained relatively neglected, but has the potential to play a significant role in achieving our ambitions for saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions in the Netherlands.
