Sustainability has long become a central element of modern brand communication. But how far can advertising go when it comes to environmental claims?
With the EU Directive on Empowering Consumers for the Ecological Transition (Directive (EU) 2024/825, “EmpCo Directive”), companies face far-reaching changes. Stricter requirements will apply in the future, particularly in the following areas:
- Generic environmental claims such as “green” and “sustainable”
- Forward-looking environmental claims
- Advertising with “carbon neutrality”
- Sustainability labels
The changes will have an immediate impact on marketing, communication, and product presentation and are set to apply across the European Union from 27 September 2026.
