Criminal law expert Florian Singer joins CMS

27/05/2021

More white-collar criminal proceedings, stricter compliance rules, greater liability risks: CMS brings Florian Singer on board and expands its capacity to deal with white-collar criminal law in Austria and CEE.
As a proven expert in white-collar crime and financial criminal law, Florian Singer is now joining CMS in Vienna. Companies that encounter white-collar criminal law usually have to fight on several fronts. The combination of white-collar criminal law competence and CMS expertise in all areas of commercial law offers definite advantages to those affected.

When companies find themselves in crisis situations because their managers, their employees, or they themselves as defendants in criminal proceedings are facing far-reaching consequences because they have suffered damage due to white-collar crime, they need an expert in criminal defence and crisis management. Ideally, this expert should also be able to draw on know-how from other specialist areas such as compliance & forensic services, dispute resolution, labour law or real estate, and construction law.

With the engagement of Florian Singer, CMS Vienna augments its capacity to deal with white-collar criminal law as part of a deliberate change in strategy towards offering fully comprehensive in-house advice. Florian Singer has specialised in white-collar crime law for more than 13 years and will expand the white-collar crime and compliance practice at CMS.

Synergies as a factor in success

"Commercial criminal law is so closely linked to other areas of law that the rapid (and cost-effective) cooperation of the specialist departments in the firm will bring definite advantages for our clients," says lawyer Florian Singer. "As a specific example: the criminal liability in an embezzlement cannot be assessed without clarification of the preliminary issues under civil and corporate law.

For CMS, the new addition means a rounding-out of the product portfolio. CMS clients can now be served even more competently, quickly, and comprehensively in white-collar crime law. Florian Singer is experienced in national and international white-collar criminal defence, corporate criminal defence, representation in extradition proceedings and representation in adhesion proceedings (private participation). In addition, he advises in crisis situations (e. g. house searches) and in money laundering prevention.

Another of Florian Singer’s focuses is close cooperation with the Compliance Group under the leadership of CMS Partner Rainer Wachter. The Compliance Group tailors compliance management systems, advises companies in crisis situations, and has extensive experience dealing with internal investigations in which criminal law assessment plays an essential role.

By providing comprehensive advice to existing clients and opening up new areas of business made possible by the expanded expertise in criminal defence, the CMS white-collar criminal law practice is expected to grow steadily.

Internationally oriented white-collar criminal law

White-collar crime often affects internationally active companies. Here, CMS clients benefit because white-collar crime law experts are available in the CEE offices managed by CMS in Vienna. The straightforward cooperation within the worldwide CMS network also makes it possible to offer optimal legal advice on cross-border white-collar criminal issues.

Specialisation in white-collar and financial criminal law

After completing his law studies at the University of Vienna, Florian Singer was a university assistant at the Institute for Austrian and European Economic Criminal Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business from 2007 to 2011.
