CMS brings together Smart Operations, Legal Tech and AI under joint management
Arne Burmester heads up these three areas as Chief Solutions Officer
Berlin – With effect from 1 July 2026, the Smart Operations, Legal Tech and AI teams of the international corporate law firm CMS have been brought together under joint management at its German offices. Dr Arne Burmester, head of Smart Operations since 2022, will take over these project-based areas from Smart Solutions in his new role as Chief Solutions Officer. In this role, he will also become a member of the firm's AI Board.
Combining these areas is part of the strategic development of CMS's technology and innovation activities. The aim is to combine operational expertise with the firm's legal tech and AI excellence, laying the foundation for highly specialised, AI-based client work, both now and in the future.
Thanks to his long-standing role at CMS and several years' in-house experience, Burmester possesses exceptional expertise at the interface between law, technology, operational excellence, and people and project management. Together with Stefan Sieling, who will continue as head of the Knowledge Management team, he will drive forward the further development of the Smart Solutions unit as a whole, comprising Smart Operations, Legal Tech / AI and Knowledge Management.
Dr Martin Vorsmann, Managing Partner of CMS Germany said: "By bringing together Smart Operations, Legal Tech and AI, we are strengthening the close integration of legal expertise, technology and efficient processes. Arne Burmester brings the ideal combination of operational experience, technological expertise and leadership skills to drive the strategic development of these areas."
Dr Arne Burmester added: "Integrating Smart Operations, Legal Tech and AI creates the conditions to rapidly put innovations into practice and apply them to specific client matters, while allowing us to use our technological expertise in a targeted manner for client work. This enables us to provide even more effective support, not only for our lawyers, but also directly to our clients."
