Mergermarket European M&A Awards 2022: CMS named Germany Legal Adviser of the Year

07/12/2022

Berlin – International commercial law firm CMS Germany was recognised yesterday evening at the Mergermarket European M&A Awards as Germany Legal Adviser of the Year. In conferring this award, the jury from financial information service Mergermarket paid tribute to the performance of CMS Germany’s transactions practice over the last twelve months. Mergermarket is an independent news provider and database for mergers and acquisitions in Europe.

Dr Antje Becker-Boley, partner and co-head of Corporate/M&A at CMS Germany, commented: “The award represents special recognition of what our M&A practice has accomplished. It demonstrates our outstanding capability at both national and international level, and shows that our services are appreciated by our clients. In particular, we were able to successfully leverage our strengths for the benefit of our clients in highly complex and international transactions.”

M&A transactions are the main focus of CMS’s corporate law work. With around 180 lawyers, the firm offers M&A advice that combines solid legal expertise and experience with insider industry knowledge. The Corporate/M&A practice has long held a leading position in the M&A league tables. CMS advises on more M&A transactions in Germany and Europe than any other law firm. When clients acquire a company or invest in one, CMS’s Corporate/M&A lawyers work seamlessly with experts from other areas both within Germany and internationally to deliver tailor-made M&A advice from a single source.

Examples of the many M&A matters handled by CMS in 2022 include advising Northland Power Inc. on a joint venture with RWE Renewables to develop a 1.3 GW cluster of offshore wind projects in the German section of the North Sea; Hanseatic Energy Hub on the investment by chemicals company Dow as an additional partner in the project company working to deliver the future LNG terminal at Stade industrial park; United Robotics Group on an international equity joint venture with tech company Softbank Robotics Group Corp.; Volkswagen on a joint venture with Umicore to produce cathode material for battery cells; EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg on the sale of a 49.9% stake in a solar park portfolio to the ALH Group; NORD Holding on the cross-border sale of the Bock Group; and Porsche on the acquisition of Fazua, an innovative manufacturer of e-bike drive systems, and on the formation of two joint ventures with Ponooc, part of Pon Holdings, in the e-bike and micro-mobility market.

The award was presented on 6 December 2022 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London. The high-calibre jury comprised an independent committee of 17 experts. This year’s jury included senior executives from Bayes Business School, Swissport, Unilabs, Airbus, Shell, McDermott Will & Emery, Aurelius, Baker McKenzie, Mergermarket and Dealreporter.
