Chan Xu is a senior counsel at CMS Budapest. She joined the firm in 2020, bringing with her over ten years’ legal experience from the US. Chan is admitted in the states of New York and California, holds a Chinese lawyer qualification, and is also qualified in England & Wales.
As head of the China desk, in addition to acting as the point of contact between CMS and Chinese clients, she also provides tailored and practical legal advice dedicated to Chinese companies established or seeking to become established in Hungary. Chan's expertise spans multiple industries, and she is currently focused on supporting clients in the new energy sector. To ensure maximum productivity and a client-centred approach, Chan collaborates and coordinates with CMS’s sector-specific teams to consolidate our expertise and provide clients with a ‘one-stop’ service model for flexible legal support in all areas, including employment law, litigation, commercial contracts, manufacturing and HIPA, intellectual property, and real estate transactions.
Chan started her practice in China after graduating with a L.L.B degree and admission to the China National Bar in 2005. In 2008, she earned her L.L.M. (Master of Law) degree from Boston University School of Law with a scholarship. Chan focused her L.L.M. on corporations, securities regulation and international business transactions, and received a certificate in international business practice.
Chan has represented multinational companies in a variety of corporate and transactional matters. Her specialties lie in addressing clients’ concerns through all stages of a company’s lifecycle, including general corporate governance, transactions, mergers and acquisitions, start-up and venture capital financing. She has reviewed, drafted and negotiated a broad range of contracts. Chan has also advised clients and multinational corporations with an interest in developing business opportunities in China regarding their investment and cross-border transactions. Before her practice in the US, she also worked in the corporate group at a top-ranking Chinese law firm and represented clients in joint venture transactions.
Chan has represented clients in complex business litigation in both state and federal courts in the US. She represented clients in federal court and has extensive trial experience, among which the longest lasted one month with a jury. She helped the client save millions of dollars through a Judgment as Matter of Law Motion with a significantly reduced amount in the unfavourable verdict.
