30/06/2021

Cologne – FC Schalke 04 Esports GmbH has sold its slot in the League of Legends European Championship to Swiss e-sports organisation Team BDS for EUR 26.5 million in the context of a structured bidding process. The professional European e-sports League of Legends competition is organised by Riot Games. The licence rights will be transferred with effect from the 2022 spring season.

A CMS team comprising lead partner Dr Malte Bruhns and Philipp Kunick advised FC Schalke 04 on all legal aspects of preparing and implementing the bidding process.

FC Schalke 04 has been active in e-sports since 2016, as one of the first football clubs worldwide. It has played a pioneering role in recent years in League of Legends, FIFA and PES. League of Legends is a computer game developed by Riot Games. Official sources put the number of players each month at around 100 million. FC Schalke 04 is leaving the European League of Legends after four years in the top-level competition. It has taken part in the League of Legends European Championship ever since the event was established, reaching 4th place in the league’s playoffs in the 2021 spring season.
