In his recently published book “Künstliche Intelligenz und Recht – Von der Wissensrepräsentation zur automatisierten Entscheidungsfindung” (Artificial intelligence and the law –from the representation of knowledge to automatic decision making) (OCG Wien) Johannes Scharf examines ontology (the formal representation of meanings and the logical relations between them) as a knowledge base for expert systems in government administration (for example, FinanzOnline).
His research covers a broad range of topics, from the basis for the formalisation of legal norms, through the current approaches being used in the legal representation of knowledge to the concept of a legal “rule engine” which takes the law’s temporal dimension into account for the first time.
