CMS partner Dr Klaus Sachs appointed member of Formula 1 disputes panel

International Court of Arbitration

24/02/2010

Munich – The International Court of Arbitration of the Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has appointed CMS partner Dr Klaus Sachs to the Contract Recognition Board, the committee that represents the contractual interests of Formula 1 drivers. This appointment as German representative for the year 2010 makes Sachs one of the four regular members of the panel set up in 1992 by the Fédération Internationale d’Automobiles (FIA). He has been one of the Vice Chairmen of the International Court of Arbitration since 2009. The Formula 1 committee rules on differences of opinion between Formula 1 drivers and the racing teams. Cases before the Contract Recognition Board follow a fast track procedure. Hearings are scheduled at short notice and the panel usually reaches a decision within a few days.

Sachs expressed his delight: "It is an honour for me to sit on this important and highly efficient committee. As a panel, we all share the same objective of ensuring that the differences of opinion submitted to us continue to be resolved quickly and via solutions acceptable to all parties involved."

Board members are appointed for a one-year term by the president of the International Court of Arbitration and are invariably international experts in arbitration matters. The other regular members of the panel for 2010 come from France, Italy and England.
