CMS Grau incorporates Juan José Hopkins as a new partner with expertise in Fintech and M&A

September 20, 2022

The law firm CMS Grau announced the incorporation of Juan José Hopkins as a new partner. Juan José has extensive experience in financial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, Venture Capital and Fintech, so his arrival complements the legal advisory services that the firm provides to its clients from the areas of Corporate and M&A, along with Technology, Media and Communications (TMC).

Juan José Hopkins has extensive experience advising Peruvian and foreign companies in all types of corporate and project finance transactions; including advising startups in their seed financing and digital business needs. Likewise, he has advised several Fintechs in their entry into the country and in banking and stock market regulation issues.

His previous experiences as founding partner of Sumara Hub Legal stand out, as well as having been in charge of the legal area of the most important trust company in Peru. Hopkins says he is "excited about the opportunity to join CMS Grau and contribute to the positioning of a first class corporate-technological advisory practice, considering that digital business is becoming more and more important in the day-to-day life of clients".

Juan Carlos Escudero, Managing Partner de CMS Grau, considers:

"It is strategic the growth of both areas to provide comprehensive advice to our clients in the context of innovation, new technologies and sophisticated corporate transactions, meeting the new challenges and challenges in the day to day operations."

Regarding Peruvian regulation in the Fintech industry, Hopkins comments:

"Currently Peruvian regulation is quite flexible for the development of this type of business, so the sector has grown considerably in these years, but we are waiting for the Open Banking regulation so that the sector can grow even more and collaborate much closer with traditional banking."

CMS Grau's new partner holds a law degree from the University of Lima and a Master's degree in Finance and Corporate Law from ESAN University. He has recently been recognized in the category of Banking and Finance by the international ranking Chambers & Partners 2023. He is a regular speaker at business and academic events on financial technology topics, and author of articles of interest on trends and new legislation in the Fintech industry. He currently teaches graduate and executive programs and courses at ESAN University.

Carolina Gajate, partner of TMC said:

"We are delighted with the incorporation of Juan José Hopkins as a new partner. Juanjo brings a broad background focused on the financial technology sector, business and digital services. We are confident that his addition will have a positive impact on CMS Grau's clients and will strengthen the development of our team".

This growth goes hand in hand with the unprecedented number of global promotions within the CMS law firm. During 2021 they announced a total of 60 appointments in 33 cities across Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and women have accounted for 43% of partner promotions globally.

These moves reflect a successful year for CMS Grau, underscoring the firm's commitment to invest, nurture and rely on its people in the service of its clients. CMS Grau currently has 22 practice areas of which 13 are led or co-led by women.
