We know that sustainability is not just a legal issue but we believe that sustainability needs a legal framework to bring about change. We are encouraged that politicians, governments and intergovernmental organisations have recognised the importance of the law as a lever to make sustainable business the norm. We support the legalisation of sustainability because we know, understand and believe in the power of law.
We are therefore pleased to be selected as a legal advisor to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), hosted by the UAE which serves as a critical juncture to assess advancements made since the Paris Agreement was established at COP21 in 2015. Its agenda is structured around four key themes: finance, technology and innovation, inclusion, and support for frontline communities, with a focus on identifying practical and effective solutions for climate action.
More than 160 CMS lawyers worldwide are providing pro bono legal advice to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) on a variety of topics ranging from sustainability finance to UN related partnerships and many more. The Global Lead for this important project for CMS is Döne Yalcin (Partner and member of the global CMS Sustainability and ESG leadership team).
