Satellites are connecting smartphones directly to mobile networks. Data flows seamlessly across borders. Cybersecurity risks continue to grow. And every day, emerging space technologies and business models challenge established legal and regulatory frameworks and raise novel legal questions.
Join us for engaging discussions and expert insights into patent and licensing issues in satellite communications, dispute resolution, deal drivers in the space economy, as well as the future of German, European and international space regulation.
We look forward to welcoming you to an afternoon of insightful discussions, thought-provoking perspectives and meaningful networking. Take the opportunity to catch up and connect. Attendance is free, but space is limited.
Programme
| 4:00 p.m. | Registrations |
| 4:15 p.m. | Welcome Remarks by Dr Tilman Niedermaier, CMS (Germany), Head of Dispute Resolution |
| 4:25 pm.m | Keynote: Building Europe’s eyes in space by Imane Marouf, Co-Founder & CCO, ecosmic |
| 4:45 p.m. | From patents to protocols: The future of space IP by Luke Murray, CMS (UK), Patent attorney and astrophysicist |
| 5 p.m. | Key patent challenges in satellite telecommunications by Dr Stephan Dorn, CMS (Germany), Co-Head International CMS Patent Group and Tom Carver, CMS (UK) Satellite telecommunications is not only the backbone of terrestrial communications but has evolved to provide direct network access. Massive LEO satellite constellations are envisioned to provide D2D (direct to device) and D2C (direct to cell) access to cellular communication networks. Although located in space, far from national borders and courts, the operation of satellite communications networks will most likely be vulnerable to cellular patents like terrestrial networks and will require licensing of those patents. |
| 5:30 p.m. | Deal drivers in the space economy at the intersection of defense, AI and digital infrastructure – an M&A perspective by Dr Maximilian Grub, CMS (Germany) |
| 5:50 p.m. | New Space, New Rules? The future of space regulation and legal certainty for innovation by Dr Michael Biendl, CMS (Germany) An overview of regulatory developments in the European and international space sector and a discussion of the legal framework, including the interplay with existing horizontal digital regulation, needed to foster innovation, attract investment, and ensure (cyber) security, sustainability and fairness in space, while creating a coherent and future-proof regulatory ecosystem. |
| 6:10.p.m. | Q&A and Closing followed by drinks, a light selection of food and the opportunity to network |
