CMS advises Metropolitan Equity Partners on the sale of Wismar Pellets GmbH to LEAG

Cologne – Germany's second largest power producer, the Cottbus-based LEAG Group, has acquired Wismar Pellets GmbH, based in Wismar, from US private equity investor Metropolitan Equity Partners in a bidding process to expand the production and supply portfolio of its refining operations. The target company is one of the largest pellet producers in Germany and produces about 256,000 tonnes of high-quality wood pellets annually at its main plant for the generation of green heat and green electricity. In addition, Wismar Pellets GmbH owns a stake in the biomass cogeneration plant of Bioenergie Wismar as well as Best Pellets Handelsgemeinschaft GmbH and German Pellets Denmark Aps, which coordinates the group's Scandinavian business. The acquisition has already been cleared by the Federal Cartel Office. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

A CMS team headed by Dr Malte Bruhns, Christopher von Lilien-Waldau and Dr Nora Zabel comprehensively advised Metropolitan Equity Partners on the preparation and implementation of the sale process. Metropolitan Partners is a US investment fund based in New York City that provides growth financing for companies. Back in 2021, a CMS team headed by Hamburg energy law partner Dr Holger Kraft advised Wismar Pellets GmbH on the acquisition of its stake in Bioenergie Wismar's biomass cogeneration plant.
