Leipzig – The shareholders in nextbike have sold their shares to Berlin-based TIER Mobility, which describes itself as Europe’s micro-mobility leader. Leipzig-based nextbike claims to be the European market leader in bike sharing. TIER acquired the shares in nextbike from previous majority owner Co-Investor Partners, a private equity investor focusing on high-growth companies in the DACH region, and the other shareholders. The sale was conducted as a cash transaction. Figures provided by the two companies indicate that the merger will create Europe’s largest and most diverse micro-mobility provider, with more than 250,000 vehicles across over 400 towns and cities. The two companies are aiming for further expansion going forward.
A CMS team headed by lead partner Dr Jochen Lux advised the nextbike shareholders on all legal aspects of the transaction. Bike sharing operator nextbike has relied on the law firm’s expertise for many years. Previous work included the legal advice provided by CMS on the financing round when Co-Investor Partners first invested in nextbike in 2014. Dr Ralph Eric Kunz, a partner at Co-Investor Partners, commented: “We are delighted that nextbike is joining forces with TIER to implement the next stage in the company’s successful development. We would like to thank the team at CMS Germany for their support in recent years, and for their competent and committed legal advice throughout the transaction process.”
By its own account, nextbike is the European market leader in bike sharing. The micro-mobility pioneer has been developing smart rental schemes for bicycles since 2004. True to the motto “We like to share”, the aim is to enable sustainable mobility, to make public transport even more environmentally friendly and to supplement it with attractive personal transport options. The company currently operates in more than 300 cities worldwide.
