Laura Dereje (née Schierbaum) specialises in online platforms, new media and digital business models with a particular focus on data protection law. She advises international and national companies in the areas of digital platforms, online retail and online marketing. Her extensive expertise extends in particular to online advertising (use of cookies and similar technologies), all marketing issues (in accordance with the German Unfair Competition Act (UWG) and the GDPR) as well as online data protection, e-commerce and e-payment and typical data protection law issues (e.g. consent, data transfers and the use of customer or employee data).
Another particular focus of her work is representing clients before data protection supervisory authorities. In addition, she has in-depth knowledge of media law, particularly in the areas of freedom of expression, press and broadcasting law.
In 2024 and 2025, she gained in-house experience during secondments at one of the world's largest operators of online classified ad portals and at cleverbridge, an online platform and partner for SaaS e-commerce companies.
During her Doctorate, she worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Constitutional Law at the University of Cologne and in the media law practice area group of an international commercial law firm in Bonn.
Laura Dereje has been a lawyer at CMS since 2018.
