Following the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Pesticides, the Government has announced the ban of the use of the pesticide lindane in the seed treatment process. This is in response to concern that operators of seed treatment plants could be exposed to unacceptable levels of the pesticide. The ban on the marketing or use of lindane, an organochlorine insecticide approved for a variety of agricultural and non-agricultural uses, took effect on 7 July 1999.
