Frankfurt/Main – Gauss Fusion GmbH, a green venture in the fusion technology sector based in Hanau, has raised around EUR 8 million in an initial pre-seed round of financing. Gauss Fusion is an initiative by various European companies. The founding companies and strategic partners from the fusion technology industry are Alcen (France), ASG Superconductors (Italy), Bruker EAS (Germany), IDOM (Spain) and RI Research Instruments (Germany). Dr Frank Laukien, President and CEO of the international Bruker Corporation, is co-founder and Executive Chairman of Gauss Fusion. The founding companies have many years’ experience in this technological field. With Gauss Fusion, they are aiming to drive development of an energy source that delivers a clean base load using high-field magnetic fusion power plants. The goal is to build the first European GW-class magnetic fusion power plant by 2045 and connect it to the power grid. The start capital that has now been raised is the first key milestone for the company, which was established in 2022. Gauss Fusion expects leading partners from the energy industry to join the initiative in the near future.
A CMS team headed by lead partners Dr Hendrik Hirsch and Dr Jessica Mohaupt-Schneider advised Gauss Fusion on all legal aspects, including company formation, establishing a corporate governance system and conducting this pre-seed round of financing. Tech company Bruker is a longstanding CMS client and regularly relies on the expertise of the Corporate/M&A team led by Hendrik Hirsch.
In December 2022, researchers in the US using controlled nuclear fusion in the lab succeeded in producing more energy than they input during the fusion process – a scientific breakthrough that attracted worldwide interest. Unlike nuclear fission, nuclear fusion involves combining two nuclei to form a single heavier nucleus. This form of nuclear energy is considered clean and safe, causing politicians to increasingly focus on magnetic fusion as an energy source. There is now widespread hope that nuclear fusion will solve our energy problems. Nuclear fusion is expected to complement renewables as an energy source. Gauss Fusion is characterised by a combination of strong industrial leadership, sector expertise and close cooperation with renowned European research institutes and technology experts, including the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Gauss Fusion takes an entrepreneurial approach and is aiming to achieve significant acceleration through a close public-private partnership (PPP) with national and European institutions.
