Markus is a leading adviser on artificial intelligence, crypto and IT law, with a practice built at the intersection of law and technology. A software engineer before becoming a lawyer, he understands how AI systems actually work, and clients turn to him when legal questions can only be answered with real technical insight.

He advises on:

  • AI compliance: AI Act readiness, high-risk AI assessments, and privacy-compliant model training
  • AI governance: building frameworks that let organisations scale AI responsibly
  • Contract negotiations: AI, SaaS, and technology agreements
  • Emerging technologies and business models: physical AI, machine learning, regulated industries, MiCAR compliance, and smart contracts

Markus is known for guiding clients through new legal territory where there is no precedent. Tech companies value that he speaks their language, understands their sector, and offers pragmatic, solution-oriented advice that supports innovation rather than slowing it down. He heads the CMS AI International Focus Group, sits on the CMS AI Board, is the author and editor of several legal handbooks on AI and is the co-editor of a leading legal journal on IT law.

Markus joined CMS in 2014 and has been a partner since 2022.
