The Environmental Protection (Disposal of Polychlorinated Biphenyls and other Dangerous Substances) (England and Wales) Regulations 2000 (SI 2000 No 1043) come into force on 4 May 2000. The legislation aims to ensure the safe and effective phase-out and disposal of PCBs remaining in equipment such as transformers and capacitors. The use of PCBs in the UK has been progressively restricted since the 1970s with their supply and use in new plant and equipment banned since 1986.
Under these new Regulations, holders of PCB contaminated equipment are required to register that equipment with the Environment Agency by 31 July 2000 and dispose of that equipment by 31 December 2000.
The Regulations can be downloaded from http://www.hmso.gov.uk/stat.htm.
