The Department of Trade and Industry has issued a revised Guidance Note on the Packaging (Essential Requirements) Regulations 1998 (SI 1998 No. 1165). The guide is intended to assist both those involved in the placing of packaged goods on the market and the enforcement authorities, to help them understand the effect of the Regulations. The Regulations came into force on 31 May 1998, the main requirement being that any person responsible for packing or filling products into packaging or importing packed or filled packaging into the UK must ensure that that packaging fulfils the Essential Requirements and the Heavy Metal concentration limits. The revised Guidance Note contains revised heavy metal limits up to 30 June 2001 as well as the most recent Draft Standards on Packaging that are available from the BSI.
