CMS appointed to advise Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

30 May 2023

International law firm CMS has been awarded a three-year contract with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), formerly the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, to provide claims handling, litigation and advisory services across the UK on the Government’s liabilities arising from the operation of the former nationalised coal industry. CMS partnered with sub-contractors including Harper Macleod for claims brought in Scotland.

CMS has provided legal advice in relation to occupational disease liabilities arising from the former nationalised British Coal Industry since 1990.

CMS Partner Gregor Woods commented: “We are delighted to continue to support DESNZ in this area. This is a significant re-appointment for the CMS Defendant Personal Injury Team and we are excited by the prospect of a further three years of collaboration with the Department.”

The team was led by Gregor Woods and Tim Riordan, supported by Gareth Watkins, Amanda Davies and Katarzyna Kozdroj (Insurance & Reinsurance); and Tracey Marsden (Employment).
