CMS significantly strengthens insurance offering with two new partners in Sheffield

26 May 2021

International law firm CMS is pleased to announce the appointment of Gregor Woods as a partner, and the promotion of Tim Riordan to partner in its Defendant Personal Injury team, part of the firm’s Insurance and Reinsurance group. Both Gregor and Tim will be based in the firm’s Sheffield office. Gregor joins CMS from Kennedys.

Gregor has significant experience advising large corporate clients and insurers in relation to the investigation and defence of personal injury claims. He also undertakes a wide range of disease and trauma work for a variety of clients, handling high-value injury claims and providing advice on litigation strategy.

By helping clients to better understand the litigation process and develop strategies for improving the quality of their accident investigations and training, Gregor supports corporate clients, their insurers and brokers on improving the defensibility of claims and reducing their cost. Gregor was named a Recommended Lawyer by The Legal 500 and is a member of the Forum of Insurance Lawyers.

Based in the firm’s Sheffield office, Tim Riordan advises corporates and insurers on complex high value reputational claims as well as bulk claims. He has an expertise in costs and claims handling processes and has been involved in test cases around noise induced hearing loss, vicarious liability, fixed portal costs avoidance and qualified one way cost shifting.

Carl Dray, CMS partner in the Insurance and Reinsurance group, comments: “Last year, CMS celebrated its 30th anniversary in Sheffield and the firm remains deeply committed to the North of England, evidenced by our pending move to wonderful new state-of-the-art offices in the Heart of the City development in Sheffield. Greg’s appointment, along with the promotion of Tim, invigorates our partner ranks in Sheffield, and we are excited to welcome him to the firm. The breadth and depth of Greg’s experience complements our existing offering, increases our capacity to work with insureds, insures and brokers as business partners, and to mitigate risk when meeting the challenges of a post pandemic world.”

Commenting on his appointment, Gregor Woods says: “I am delighted to be joining CMS. The firm’s excellent reputation and significant global footprint present exciting opportunities to grow my practice. CMS is also known for its commitment to innovative solutions, and I am eager to pursue new ways to support clients in handling their risk management and insurance issues more efficiently and effectively.”

Gregor and Tim will work closely together to support clients, and their appointments further strengthen the firm’s overall dispute resolution offering in the North of England.

CMS Defendant Personal Injury team in Sheffield has also been strengthened by the hiring of Emily Woodhead as a senior associate. Emily joins CMS from DAC Beachcroft.
