International law firm CMS has won the Most Innovative Use of Technology category at The Lawyer Awards ceremony. The firm has also been Commended and Highly Commended in two further categories.

The Lawyer Awards ceremony is a prestigious event celebrating legal excellence in the UK. CMS won the Most Innovative Use of Technology for the launch of CMS Umbra, its cutting-edge, AI-driven IP commercialisation tool. CMS Umbra is a first-to-market AI solution designed to help IP-rich clients – or businesses who invest in such companies – to commercialise and maximise the value of patent portfolios. CMS Umbra’s rapid search facility identifies infringements by scanning the entire written internet, as well as providing validity and freedom-to-operate assessments. Since its launch, CMS Umbra has been adopted by a number of clients who are already seeing its benefits.

Joel Vertes, Co-Head of Intellectual Property at CMS, comments: “We are delighted to have been recognised for our work on CMS Umbra and are grateful for the support that CMS has given us to launch this solution. AI has quickly grown to become an important component of the legal sector. CMS has taken the lead by launching a truly unique application, which is already helping many of our clients make the most of their patents.”

Two other teams have also been recognised during the awards ceremony, with the CMS Real Estate team being Commended for its work advising DIF Capital Partners in partnership with IB Vogt on the acquisition of the largest co-located portfolio of solar and battery storage project in the UK, while its Energy & Infrastructure Team has been Highly Commended for its work on the Eastern Green Link projects.

Toby Sears, IP Partner at CMS, adds: “To win the “Most Innovative Use of Technology” category at The Lawyer Awards is a fantastic accolade reflecting CMS’s commitment to innovation. We extend our thanks to our technology partner, IPDefine, and all our colleagues who have helped us bring CMS Umbra to the market. We are delighted to see two other CMS teams also recognised for their market-leading work on two important projects.”
