James Day is a Senior Associate in the CMS Corporate team, focusing on energy and infrastructure.

James specialises in international M&A, joint ventures and private equity, with a particular focus on renewable energy. He is a published author, has lectured in Europe and Africa on energy M&A and is an active member of several energy associations. James has worked in-house at SSE Renewables, focusing on solar, wind and battery projects.

James has also spent time working out of the Middle East, advising multinational companies on corporate acquisitions and disposals and associated foreign direct investment structures across the GCC region. He has also significant experience in transactions across Africa and the Far East.

Relevant experience

  • Brookfield Renewable, one of the world’s largest publicly traded, pure-play renewable power platforms, on its acquisition of a 50% stake in global renewable developer, X-ELIO, with an expected 3 GW of assets in operation, under construction or RTB across Spain, Italy, the U.S., Australia, Japan and Latin America, from KKR.
  • Octopus Energy and GLIL Infrastructure on the acquisition of a 12.5% interest in the Hornsea One Offshore Wind Farm, the largest operational offshore wind farm in the world with a total capacity of 1.2 GW, from Global Infrastructure Partners.
  • The Renewables Infrastructure Group on its sale of a 15.2% equity interest in the 330MW Gode 1 offshore wind farm in Germany to Equitix.
  • Cube Green Energy on its acquisition of a pan-European portfolio of onshore wind and solar assets representing c.125 MW of operating capacity across Germany, France Italy, Sweden and the UK, from Encavis AG.
  • AXA on its acquisition of a 50% interest in the Coalburn 1 BESS project from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, a 500 MW transmission connected BESS asset in Scotland, including subsequent joint venture arrangements, subject to customary closing conditions.
  • SSE Renewables on the sale of its transmission assets of the Seagreen Phase 1 offshore wind farm to an Equitix and Kyuden group consortium.
  • National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission on a joint venture in respect of Eastern Green Link 1 in 2024, a 2 GW HVDC electrical superhighway to transport clean energy from Scottish renewable energy reserves.
  • National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Transmission on a joint venture in respect of Eastern Green Link 4 in 2025, a separate 2 GW HVDC subsea cable project between Scotland and England to support UK energy decarbonisation targets through cross-border grid infrastructure.
  • Re:cap Global Investors on its acquisition of Scurf Dyke Solar, a CfD-supported 80 MW co-located solar and battery project.
  • Hydro Rein on its solar joint venture with Commerz Real and acquisition of a 362 MW Danish solar portfolio, for a platform intended for scaling to 1 GW.
  • Jericho Energy Ventures, a low-carbon energy transition investor, on its venture capital investment alongside Lowercarbon Capital and New Energy Technology, into Supercritical Solutions, a hydrogen technology company.
