Phil is an Associate in the Dispute Resolution team in Manchester. He joined the firm in May 2024, having qualified as a solicitor in 2021. Prior to joining CMS, Phil worked for a large defendant insurance law firm for 9 years, with a focus on contentious and litigated matters. 

Phil has extensive experience in a wide range of commercial disputes, including having advised clients in complex and high value litigation involving breach of contract, professional negligence, insolvency, trusts, and data protection issues, with a keen interest in IT / technology disputes. Phil is also experienced in alternative dispute resolution, having assisted clients in settlement negotiations and mediation, and has also assisted on the execution of supervising solicitor search and seize orders. 

Phil acts for both Claimants and Defendants and has acted for clients in County Court, High Court, and First Tier Tax Tribunal cases. He has acted for a diverse range of clients, including commercial, private individual, health and insurance clients. He combines a comprehensive understanding of civil procedure and substantive law with a pragmatic and commercial approach to litigation.

  • A construction and site remediation company in a complex £3.5m claim against a former director for breach of their fiduciary duties when operating a competing company and for diverting business opportunities.
  • A nationwide chain of builders merchants in a £1.5m breach of contract and professional negligence claim against asbestos surveys.
  • Quarry operators in an appeal against a £1.7m landfill tax assessment in the First Tier Tax Tribunal.
  • A Trustee in Bankruptcy in a multi-million pound and multi-jurisdictional litigated insolvency dispute, including tracing hidden assets and interviews of the bankrupt and their associates under oath. 
  • An IT service provider in a £500k professional negligence claim arising from a malware attack.
  • An IT service provider in a £600k GDPR data breach claim pursued by a customer and their data subjects. 
  • Private clients in their capacity as trustees of a SSAS pension scheme in defending and pursuing claims via the Pension Ombudsman.
  • A trailer manufacturer in a speedy trial for the enforcement of restrictive covenants against a former salesman.
