Sarah qualified into the Insurance and Reinsurance Group in 1998 and since then has specialised in contentious and non-contentious construction, property and engineering insurance. Sarah helps clients to find timely and pragmatic solutions at the contract stage and in disputes;  she has extensive experience of mediation, arbitration and litigation.  

Sarah drafts policy wordings, advises on complex coverage disputes under CAR, EAR, public and products liability, property damage, business interruption and professional indemnity policies and has acted on numerous high value professional indemnity claims defending contractors, architects, engineers and quantity surveyors.  She advises brokers on issues arising from the placement of construction policies.  Sarah also provides non-contentious advice on the insurance provisions of project and construction contracts and structured finance agreements.  In addition to her case work, Sarah leads the CMS Law Scholarships scheme, helping students from less advantaged backgrounds into a career in law.

  • CAR insurers in a large coverage dispute in relation to damage in tunnels.
  • CAR insurers on the operation of defects exclusions, including in relation to corrosion, delamination of pre-cast concrete, failures of piled floors, delamination of glass and road surfaces.
  • DSU insurers on coverage on construction projects in the UK and overseas.
  • An oil & gas company successfully pursuing recovery under material damage and business interruption cover following collapse of a North Sea pipeline.
  • A large contractor on insurance claims relating to serial defects in offshore wind turbines.
  • A major UK design and build contractor on maximising the value of multiple insurance coverages as part of structured settlement of claims arising out defects in a single-deck car park.
  • A train operating company in the successful recovery of consequential losses resulting from a tunnel collapse.
  • Defending architects and civil and structural engineers, including claims arising out of the Jubilee Line extension and in relation to supermarkets, sports venues, office blocks, warehouses, flood defence works and hospitals.
  • Power companies on the insurance provisions for infrastructure projects.
  • Lenders, employers and project companies on the insurance arrangements for a number of PFI/PPP projects.
