Embracing AI at CMS
Our AI strategy
At CMS, we’re committed to being at the forefront of innovation, AI and legal tech.
Generative AI is an exciting development and has the potential to make lawyers and legal work more efficient and power a new range of legal services. Our dedicated team have been following the developments and trends in generative AI, exploring how it can benefit our clients and our business.
We want to be known by our clients as being future facing – and for AI that means having access to and using the best AI tools to help make us smarter, having industry leading expertise to be able to advise clients on AI and tech challenges, and everyone at CMS knowing about and leveraging AI and other tools to help our clients.
How are we using AI?
We have been experimenting and testing a number of generative AI tools and platforms, including Harvey AI, along with some of the consumer chatbot tools. We are also part of the early access programmes for a number of existing suppliers generative AI features, including Kira, Avail and Lexis+ AI.
We have also developed our own internal chatbot, that utilises the Microsoft Azure OpenAI connector – all within our secure Microsoft cloud environment.
Most excitingly, we have been part of the Microsoft 365 Copilot Early Access Program since August 2023. CMS was one of only 600 organisations globally to join the Early Access Program for the launch of the Microsoft 365 Copilot system.
Recent case studies
Microsoft Copilot
The Microsoft 365 Copilot system is built on OpenAI’s ChatGPT and is embedded into the Microsoft 365 apps we use on a regular basis – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and more.
Will AI make International Arbitration more efficient?
CMS and client teams from across the UK explored this question in the latest instalment of our AI Disputes programme. In an immersive AI workshop, participants took part in a mock emergency arbitration to test large language AI models to assist with preparation of written and oral submissions. Using ChatGPT, Claude, Harvey, and Pi to aid them in project management, issue analysis, drafting and critiquing, participants had the opportunity to explore the potential risks and benefits of utilising Generative AI in an urgent legal situation.
