Gene editing

2 min read

On this page

Gene editing enables targeted alteration of DNA in the genome, essentially allowing the genetic makeup of a living organism to be customised. Gene editing techniques involve the use of engineered nucleases, including zinc-finger nucleases, TALENs and the CRISPR/Cas system. These approaches can be used for research, diagnostic and eventually therapeutic purposes.

All gene editing techniques bring challenges, for example, off-target activity and complexity of use, but in recent years the use of the CRISPR/Cas system in particular has gained momentum. The CRISPR/Cas system is a highly customizable tool that is constantly evolving, with the new prime editing approach hitting the patent headlines in 2019.

Due to the fast-paced and contentious nature of this field, gene editing inventions can present complex scenarios from a patent perspective.  These require careful consideration of filing strategies, particular attention to enablement of the invention, or issues relating to multi-party oppositions. Our patent attorneys are highly experienced both in dealing with these technologies and the specific challenges they raise, having worked with various gene editing companies, in particular CRISPR technology companies, finding innovative solutions to get the best possible outcome for our clients.
