The loot box seems to be almost a requirement for any AAA release in the video gaming world today. From Overwatch's pioneering use of the term, to FIFA's Ultimate Team pack, to NBA 2k20  being slammed as a "gambling simulator" in nearly 2,000 Steam reviews, the presence of consumables offering a randomised selection of virtual items just seems part and parcel of enjoying video games. While criticisms of the content have been around since their inception.
