Cologne – US online insurance company Lemonade is entering the German market, initially offering household contents and liability insurance. Germany was chosen as the first European country for expansion of the insurtech firm outside the US, with Amsterdam serving as the company’s European base. Lemonade is currently available in most US states and in Germany, with further global expansion planned.
A CMS team headed by lead partner Dr Winfried Schnepp advised Lemonade on all legal aspects of launching business operations in Germany, including contract design for the household contents and liability insurance policies and structuring of online selling.
Lemonade is a licensed insurance company offering renters and homeowners insurance in the US, as well as household contents and personal liability insurance in Germany. The insurtech firm was established in 2016. Driven by artificial intelligence and behavioural economics, Lemonade replaces insurance brokers and bureaucracy with chatbots and machine learning. As a certified B Corporation, with surpluses being paid out to non-profit organisations, Lemonade aims to transform insurance from a necessary evil into a social good.
