International legal tech project – CMS advises automotive supplier Leoni on preparing and implementing contract automation worldwide

Stuttgart – Leoni AG, a global provider of products, solutions and services for energy and data management in the automotive industry, has automated all its directors’ employment contracts worldwide as part of an innovative legal tech project. The company can now create and manage international service contracts with directors on the basis of a uniform standard for all countries – with everything done from Germany. This standardisation is set to boost efficiency and quality significantly. It will also drive forward and extend compliance standards at the highest level.

A multinational CMS team headed by partner Dr Oliver Simon advised Leoni on all legal aspects of this innovative and groundbreaking project. The team collaborated closely with colleagues from other law firms within the worldwide CMS organisation. The advice focused on the preparation and subsequent IT automation of directors’ employment contracts across a total of 23 countries in which the Leoni Group operates via its own subsidiaries. First of all, a bilingual draft of the contract (in the local language and English) was developed for each country with the assistance of local lawyers, based on centralised contract content and clauses of particular importance for the business. The draft contracts were then automated for each country by the legal tech team at CMS Germany, and a comprehensive digital questionnaire created in an interview format. From its headquarters in Nuremberg, the company can now produce a draft contract specific to the particular country. Contracts can then be customised by selecting or deselecting specific content, such as provisions that are a legal requirement. The challenging project was coordinated by CMS Germany and carried out in close consultation with Leoni.
