CMS advises Discovery on SVOD investment

22 February 2021

International law firm CMS has advised Discovery Inc. on its investment in BluTV, Turkiye’s first and largest local subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service which is globally available to all Turkish and Arabic speaking audiences. The strategic partnership will also make BluTV the SVOD home of all the content from Discovery’s iconic global and local brands, enabling subscribers in Turkiye to watch their favourite shows, including Eurosport’s premium sports offering.

Discovery will hold a 35% interest initially, with an option to invest in BluTV further in the coming years. The investment will accelerate Discovery’s entrance into the important Turkish market of 83 million people and allow BluTV to scale its penetration of the rapidly growing 4+ million subscriber SVOD universe. Discovery will also be able to access BluTV’s hugely popular Turkish original content for discovery+ outside of Turkiye.

The core CMS team was led by Paul Guite (Corporate) and Victoria Gaskell (Commercial Media), together with Sarah Wilson and Shirin Shah (Corporate) and Laurel O’Dell, Nicholas Crossland and Rahul Gandhi (Commercial Media) in London, working alongside colleagues Alican Babalioglu, Inci Alaloglu-Cetin, Naz Ugurlu, Irmak Aybarturk, Emir Baran and Jerfi Onur Dogan in Turkiye.
