CMS has advised Green BESS Developments (UK) Limited (GBD) on the sale of the Eccles and Kilmarnock BESS projects to Matrix Renewables, a global renewable energy platform.

GBD is a subsidiary of Czech investment group Creditas. The Eccles and Kilmarnock projects are located at two strategic sites along major electricity transmission corridors between Scotland and England. With a combined capacity of 1GW/2GWh, the two sites are the largest standalone battery projects in the UK currently, and are set to play a critical role in bolstering grid stability and accelerating the energy transition in the UK.

CMS Corporate Partner Danielle Heath comments: “We are pleased to have advised GBD on the successful sale of the Eccles and Kilmarnock projects. These transactions highlight the growing importance of battery energy storage in the UK's energy transition, and we are proud to support our clients in navigating such significant deals. Our expertise in the battery energy sector was instrumental in bringing this transaction to a successful conclusion.”

CMS Energy and Infrastructure Partner Philip Duffield comments: “This transaction underscores CMS's unparalleled strength and depth in the battery energy storage sector. This deal also demonstrates the continued investor appetite for the sector, including for larger scale projects of several hundred megawatts or more. We are committed to driving forward the energy transition and are proud to be at the forefront of this rapidly evolving sector.”

CMS provided GBD with comprehensive advice on construction and maintenance contracts, as well as property aspects throughout the entire process, up to the point of sale.

The CMS team was led by Danielle Heath, Philip Duffield and Brynn Horner, and included Adam Fenby-Betts (Corporate); Tom Ballard and Kate Merrill (Energy & Climate Change); Claire Wallis and Louise Passmore (Real Estate); and Jason Todd and Alex Oldland (Tax).

This transaction is the latest in a series of BESS projects that CMS has advised on. To date, CMS has advised on over 10GW of projects in the UK, cementing its market-leading expertise in the sector.
