Ed is an Associate in the Energy & Infrastructure team, specialising in the power and clean energy sectors.

Ed advises developers, equity and debt investors, utilities (including electricity and gas transmission and distribution licensees), and energy users (including corporate offtakers) on the development, acquisition and financing of renewable and other clean energy projects, as well as a wide range of regulatory, transactional, and commercial matters throughout the sector.

Ed has previously spent time on secondment at Equinor, working on their renewable and low-carbon projects in the UK and Europe (including their portfolio of UK offshore wind projects).

Relevant experience

  • Net Zero Teesside Power (a JV of bp and Equinor) and the Northern Endurance Partnership (bp, Equinor and TotalEnergies) on its first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power and carbon capture project (742MW), and a new onshore and offshore pipeline network for the transportation and permanent geological storage of CO2. Ed advised on multiple aspects of NZT and NEP, but in particular the Dispatchable Power Agreement (the first of its kind in the UK), which provides revenue support to NZT, the economic regulatory regime for NEP, and the on-site power arrangements.
  • DIF Capital Partners on its acquisition, and subsequent debt financing, of a 720MW portfolio of solar and storage projects (the largest UK co-location portfolio), including advising on its first-of-a-kind co-located solar and storage offtake agreement.
  • A consortium of Macquarie Asset Management and British Columbia Investment Management Corporation on the purchase of a majority stake in National Grid’s GB gas transmission and metering business, including securing the necessary regulatory approvals from Ofgem.
  • Brookfield Asset Management on the sale of its stake in First Hydro Company, which owns the Dinorwig and Ffestiniog pumped hydro plants in Wales with a combined capacity of over 2 GW, to CDPQ.
  • Eku Energy on the development and project financing of the 99MW/198MWh Ocker Hill BESS, and in particular an innovative and market-leading 10-year tolling agreement, the longest announced toll for a BESS project at the time.
  • Equinor on the acquisition and development of the Blandford Road and Welkin Mill battery storage facilities, and on the grid, regulatory, and offtake aspects of its investments in battery storage in the UK.
  • Multiple global energy companies on the regulatory frameworks for the development of CCUS and hydrogen projects in the UK, including the Hydrogen Business Model and Low Carbon Hydrogen Agreement, the CCUS TRI model, and the Dispatchable Power Agreement.
  • A wide range of clients on the TMO4+ reforms to the grid connection queue in the UK, including developers and a major distribution network.
  • A major interntional energy company on the EU and UK rules relating to the independence/unbundling of transmission system operators (in relation to both onshore transmission and subsea interconnectors), including providing strategic advice at an executive level.
  • Multiple leading global brands on their renewable energy procurement and supply arrangements, including power purchase agreements with renewable generators.
