Geraldine leads the Commercial Litigation team in CMS’s Manchester office. 

She is one of the North-West’s most respected and well-known litigation practitioners. She has been ranked in the Chambers and Partners for 24 years and in Band 1 for 11years.

She is ranked in the Hall of Fame by Legal 500 and was recently honoured as “Dispute Resolution Lawyer of the Year” by Legal 500 at the Northern Powerhouse Awards 2024.

With over 35 years’ experience of handling all types of high-profile, high-value and complex litigation, including arbitration and judicial review, Geraldine specialises in commercial dispute resolution and also has a particular specialism in reputation risk, defamation and contractual termination advice. 

Always keen to see the commercial angles and alive to costs risks and reduction, she has been praised by clients for her “highly responsive and valuable advice”. 

When appropriate she has represented clients in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court but believes on a focus of getting the best commercial result and in using ADR to resolve matters.

Relevant experience

  • An airport in relation to a multi-million breach of contract claim against an airline in relation to breach of contract following withdrawal from the airport, which lead to closure of the airport and involved Defendants across multiple jurisdictions. The matter had extensive coverage in the media and due to the catastrophic consequences of the breach was of huge significance to the client.
  • Handling a claim against a Local Government Pension Fund on behalf of a proprietor of academy schools involving a multi-million pound High Court claim and a complaint to the Pensions Ombudsman.
  • A London based art dealer in relation to allegations of breach of contract and theft, relating to various important artworks with a multi million pound value, pursued by two celebrities. The matter is not only of significant value, but also involves serious reputational risk and is currently in mediation.
  • A number of contractual disputes for a British multinational corporation with multi billion pound global revenues. Recent matters include a dispute with a local authority in relation to the partial suspension of waste collections and a dispute regarding the validity of invoices generated for the provision of security and other services at Covid-19 testing sites across the length and breadth of the UK. The dispute is of great reputational and commercial significance to the client. 
  • An International Arbitration case that involved a 2 week Final Hearing of a contractual claim and resulted in a full award for our client including a costs award that recognised the unreasonable behaviour of the Claimant.
