Matt Holder is a Senior Associate in the Infrastructure, Construction and Energy (ICE) Disputes Group. 

Matt focusses on international arbitration and dispute resolution of energy and infrastructure disputes all over the world. In recent years, Matt has advised clients on multi billion-dollar disputes in the energy and chemical production industries. He also regularly supports clients through the project delivery phase to manage risk and avoid disputes. Matt has a wide depth of experience, having worked in the Middle East and also as in house litigation counsel for a leading power contractor.

Matt supports clients a wide array of clients, including construction and engineering contractors, owners, design consultancies and quasi state entities.

Relevant experience

  • A state-owned corporation in an ICC arbitration concerning a multibillion-dollar dispute relating to the financing of a major infrastructure project in the Nordic region (both English and foreign law).
  • An international joint venture contractor in an ICC arbitration in connection with disputes concerning the construction of a major power plant in the UK.
  • An international utilities company in relation to disputes concerning the operation of a major power and desalination plant in the Middle East.
  • A state-owned corporation in DAB proceedings regarding the termination of a multibillion-dollar power project in the Nordic region (both English and foreign law).
  • A Japanese contractor in an ICC arbitration in relation to the construction of a major wind farm in Europe.
  • A North American conglomerate in relation multiple disputes concerning the construction and operation of a major power plant in the UAE.  The matter involved the preparation of simultaneous freezing injunctions across several jurisdictions.
  • A leading fertiliser producer in an ICC arbitration concerning a billion-dollar dispute relating to the termination of a production facility in Eastern Europe (both English and foreign law).
  • A North American conglomerate in an ICC arbitration concerning the construction of a major substation in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
  • An international dredging company in relation to the merits of pre-arbitration claims and counterclaims under a FIDIC contract relating to a major development project in Bahrain (foreign law).
  • A leading power contractor on multiple pre-action disputes in relation to aluminium smelter complexes in the UAE.
  • A global design consultancy regarding a multimillion-pound fee claim in connection with a multibillion-dollar transport infrastructure project in Qatar (under Qatari Law) in an ICC arbitration.
  • A major oil company in relation to US$700 million of pre-arbitration claims and counterclaims under an EPC contract dispute relating to a billion-dollar oil processing facility in Iraq.
  • A leading Italian contractor in relation to the termination of a USD 35m contract for the construction of highways and tunnels in the Middle East.
