Nicola is a Senior Associate in the Environment, Health & Safety team.

With over 20 years of experience in environmental law, Nicola has an excellent understanding of this complex law and policy landscape and can rapidly see the implications of new developments in this fast-evolving field. Her scientific background means she excels at understanding technical projects and swiftly identifying actual environmental risks and practical solutions. She works particularly effectively with technical consultants in characterising environmental issues and mitigating their impacts. She has strong expertise in contaminated land, development, mining and minerals, waste and chemicals and has worked on a wide range of transactions and development projects affected by such issues.  Nicola has also developed and delivered training for clients, industry professionals and students. 

Relevant experience

  • A large international company in advising on its obligations under EU and non-EU group companies under EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive and EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.
  • A major NGO in creating a national strategy regarding the reuse of materials from infrastructure projects in their development projects, to achieve a sustainable and robust approach meeting the requirements of complex areas of waste law.
  • A council in managing environmental risks associated with a closed landfill site operated by a predecessor body.
  • A construction contractor in an investigation by the Environment Agency alleging reuse of materials in breach of waste law, resulting in all substantive charges being dropped
  • A significant landowner on managing minewater liabilities associated with pollution from former mineworkings in the area.
  • London Borough Council on acquisition and development of complex former industrial land for £1.3bn regeneration project.
  • An industrial client identified as an “appropriate person” for meeting the remediation costs for alleged impacts on 42 residential properties, resulting in elimination of almost all liabilities.
