Robert is a Partner in the Insurance and Reinsurance Group. He is based in Bristol and has acted in a variety of professional indemnity defence work and insurance coverage issues since 2008.

Robert’s practice includes the defence of claims against a wide range of professionals, particularly construction related professionals, brokers and financial institutions. He also advises on a variety of contentious and non-contentious insurance matters, including policy coverage issues. This includes advising Insurers and Insureds on the latest legal developments and risk management. He has a particular specialism in advising on disputes involving property consultants, valuation surveyors and Insurance Brokers.

Relevant experience

  • Advising a number of national / international surveying practices in relation to a series of overvaluation claims ranging in value up to £multi-millions.
  • Conducting the defence on behalf of a national insurance broking practice in relation to series of claims relating to policy placement.
  • Defending a claim against a broker arising out of the 2011 Gibraltar port explosion.
  • Instructed by Insurers to advise on the complex application of policy coverage to a compensation fund scheme.
  • Successfully defending a hard fought claim for £30m+ concerning breach of fiduciary duty and knowing receipt arising out of a property investment scheme.
  • Acting in a dispute relating to the design of berthing dolphins at a ferry port.
  • Advising an IFA in defending in a negligent investment claim.
  • Contributor to the RICS’  Risk, Liability and Insurance guidance note & its consultation on the sustainability of the valuation profession.
  • Contributing author to Broking Practice and the Law.

  • Robert has authored a series of surveyors bulletins providing practical guidance on the key insurance issues affecting the surveying profession in light of the COVID-19 crisis.
