Stuart is a Senior Associate and Chartered Trade Mark Attorney and joined the firm in 2012. He specialises on advising clients with multi-jurisdictional intellectual property concerns, including third party disputes, the procurement or acquisition of trade marks and design rights, devising cost effective enforcement and exploitation strategies and providing targeted clearance advice.   Stuart also advises on the IP aspects of commercial contracts, in particular those concerning licensing and exploitation of trade marks, designs, copyright and other non-tangibles.

This work often includes a substantial cross-border element, and regular coordination with external lawyers in several jurisdictions to assess the relative risks and/or strategic advantages which apply in an international context.   A stickler for detail and tech savvy, Stuart has often been relied upon to design and implement technology workflows and solutions which help to drive efficiencies, minimise inconsistencies, and better present information obtained from multiple international sources.  Having undertaken several secondments to a large international technology company, Stuart returned on a mission to present legal advice in digestible and more innovative formats, to minimise administrative burdens for clients, and to deliver complex advice straightforwardly.

Stuart has experience advising multi-national companies in the technology, telecoms and pharmaceutical sectors and also assists emerging consumer goods brands.  He also enjoys working with technology start-ups through CMS’ early stage accelerator programme, CMS equIP, and has played an active role in CMS’ LGBTQ+ network.
