About CMS Energy
With more than 800 energy and climate change lawyers, including over 200 partners, the CMS Energy and Climate Change practice is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Led from its centres of excellence in London and Aberdeen, the practice works across 75 offices globally and contains over 50 dedicated lawyers based in Scotland within our Energy, Projects and Construction team.
CMS has always been at the forefront of the energy sector, both in the UK and internationally. We are proud of providing ground-breaking and unique solutions to our clients, supporting our clients pursue opportunities and overcome challenges through practical and commercial expert advice. Unlike our competitors, our lawyers work in teams that are focussed around the energy sector (rather than arranged by reference to their legal skills and working only from time to time on energy deals and disputes), and many have spent significant time in-house.
We are consistently ranked as top tier in Chambers and Legal 500 and are thought leaders in the sector, working closely with governments, universities and industry bodies. Our lawyers advised on the drafting of key industry standard documents, such as in the UK, the OEUK form of JOA, DSA and the decommissioning relief deed and have been involved in establishing energy codes and markets around the world. We have both the largest team of energy focussed lawyers in the UK and have advised on more transactions and projects than any other firm in the sector, giving us unrivalled sector expertise.
The modern energy sector requires specialist legal advisers that understand the implications for the sector of global geopolitics, economics and regulation. As the sector has matured, rather than become more standardised and commoditised, the pace of change is accelerating, so that bespoke and specialist legal advice is increasingly in demand.
We have supported the success of our clients by recognising the sector is ever more diverse and helping our clients identify how to apply the legal tools available to best fit that changing landscape. We are market-leading, global advisers on oil & gas exploration and production, mid-stream activities, traditional and newer electricity generation technologies, energy transition and climate change strategies, energy efficiency, finance, M&A, disputes, project management, emergency response, regulatory and commercial issues. Thanks to the breadth and depth of our sector knowledge and expertise, we make sure clients receive practical bespoke advice best suited to their particular commercial needs.
If you would like to get in touch or learn more about our work, our Key Contacts all based in our Aberdeen office would be delighted to chat to you about how we can provide you with specialised legal support and assistance.
