UK deploys AI experts to upgrade public services and boost national security
Key contacts
The UK government is stepping up its efforts to establish national artificial intelligence capabilities by unveiling a new collaboration with Meta. The aim is to create open‑source AI tools to improve transport systems, enhance public safety, and support defence operations.
The programme, backed by a $1 million contribution from Meta, brings leading British AI experts into government through the Alan Turing Institute. As part of the initiative, the UK government will retain full ownership of all technologies developed, in an effort to ensure that sensitive data remains securely within the government’s control.
The experts will develop AI systems that analyse images and videos to help councils prioritise road repairs. They will also create secure, offline capable tools for defence and national security teams operating in areas with limited connectivity where the stakes are high. A core design choice is that the systems will be open source, enabling departments to run, inspect, and adapt models in house. This reduces dependence on proprietary systems and enabling continuous improvement as needs evolve.
This programme forms a central pillar of the government’s digital transformation agenda, helping it to modernise services quickly and efficiently.
Commentary
Through this initiative, the UK is setting out a clear model for public sector AI: establish wide-reaching partnerships, build openly, maintain strategic autonomy, and deliver real world impact at the front line.
By building open source systems in house, departments can update and refine the technology as requirements evolve. If implemented well, this should lead to faster decision-making and more resilient systems. However, it will be important to maintain clear oversight of the initiative as the technology develops.
