Hugo Coetzee is an Infrastructure and Energy Finance partner at CMS in London. He is the co-head of the CMS Energy, Infrastructure, Project and Asset Finance Team and a member of the core management team of the global CMS Banking and Finance practice group. He has extensive experience in advising clients on strategy as well as the acquisition, development, structuring and financing of projects in the infrastructure, and energy sectors. Hugo advises clients in the UK and internationally on a wide range of innovative and complex energy and infrastructure projects representing infrastructure and renewable energy funds, developers, contractors, utilities, traditional banking institutions and public sector entities. 

Relevant experience

  • Existing Sponsors, as well as incoming and outgoing equity in respect of a number of UK offshore wind projects including Triton Knoll, Moray and Beatrice.
  • Sponsors on the project finance debt financing of a floating offshore wind farm including all corporate structuring and bankability aspects.
  • Sponsors on the Dudgeon Offshore Wind OFTO in the UK and on the senior debt financing of the Triton Knoll offshore transmission ownership project.
  • An international investor in respect of the financing and structuring aspects of their strategic joint venture in the solar industry across various jurisdictions including Spain, Mexico, UK and The Netherlands.
  • A major international corporation with regard to their strategic joint venture investment in the wind energy market in Aragon, Spain involving substantial equity and debt financing structuring arrangements.
  • Senior Lenders on the debt financing of a number of digital infrastructure (fibre) projects in the United Kingdom.
  • A club of financial institutions on the debt financing of an Independent Distribution Network Operator.
  • Various senior lenders in respect of the debt financing of portfolios of battery storage projects.
  • A major Utility on the debt financing of a joint venture EfW project in Northern England involving a holdco project financing structure.
  • A European Investment Bank, KFW Ipex Bank and Landesbank Hessen Thuringen as senior lenders to the Glasgow Colleges Project, a project development based on the Scottish NPD model.
  • On the financing of a proposed light rail project in Liverpool and advising a UK ROSCO on a number of rolling stock debt financings including the conclusion of a UK first maintenance inclusive “no train no pay” rolling stock leasing transaction.
  • Financial institutions and arrangers in South Africa on a number of export guarantee schemes involving the Maputo corridor and mining projects in Tanzania.
  • A Southern African financial institution on the structured financing of Government accommodation in Namibia involving the use of complex Namibian trust arrangements.
