Scotland’s AI data centre ambitions face potential pause

Scotland’s AI data centre plans (previously reported on here) may soon be frozen after a motion recently passed in the Scottish Government by the Scottish National Party (SNP).
According to The Guardian, supporters of the motion argue that Scotland is facing "overdevelopment" and that the volume of planned hyperscale datacentre projects could exceed the capacity of Scotland's renewable energy resources. There are currently 24 hyperscale datacentre projects in various stages of development. The motion passed by the SNP claims that the combined power requirements of these datacentres would exceed one-and-a-half times Scotland's peak electricity demand.
This follows a series of investigations by The Guardian, including one which uncovered that £20bn of a “potential” £30bn investment by OpenAI into a datacentre site in North Tyneside was “totally hypothetical”. The Guardian also reported that the planned Lanarkshire AI datacentre complex had misrepresented its renewable energy infrastructure, and that internal correspondence between the government and the site’s developers acknowledged issues with how this would be powered.
The Lanarkshire datacentre project was announced as a flagship AI growth zone (the AI growth zone plan being previously reported on here) and was expected to be completely powered by substantial new renewable energy infrastructure, but it is now being questioned whether this is possible by 2030, as planned.

If the motion is accepted, a delay could affect projects that have not yet obtained planning permission. While the motion is confined to the Scottish government, this may also affect planning across the rest of the UK.
