Your guide to London
Facts
London is the capital of the United Kingdom and one of the most iconic cities in the world. It is well-connected to other major European cities:
- Paris 🇫🇷 – ~344 km (2h 15m by Eurostar train)
- Amsterdam 🇳🇱 – ~360 km (4h by train)
- Berlin 🇩🇪 – ~930 km (1h 45m flight)
- Rome 🇮🇹 – ~1,430 km (2h 30m flight)
Key numbers
Population: ~9 million (Greater London) - third biggest city (by population) in Europe!
Area: ~1,572 km²
Recommended
- Art & culture: London is a global hub for the arts, offering everything from classical masterpieces at the National Gallery to cutting-edge installations at the Tate Modern. The city’s West End rivals Broadway with its dazzling theatre productions, and music lovers can enjoy everything from opera at the Royal Opera House to indie gigs at traditional venues in Brixton, Hammersmith and Camden Town. If museums are your thing, take a trip to Kensington and check out the Natural History Museum, Science Museum or Victoria & Albert Museum.
- History: Step back in time at the Tower of London, where you can see the Crown Jewels and learn about royal intrigue. Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s Cathedral are architectural marvels steeped in centuries of British history. The Abbey, Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace are all easy walking distance if you have time for an afternoon stroll.
- Sport: London is home to some of the country’s biggest and best football clubs, with teams like Arsenal, Chelsea and Fulham. Take a tour of the “home of cricket” at Lords or the equally impressive Oval. Or visit the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the venue of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
- Green spaces: Despite its urban density, London is one of the greenest cities in Europe, with expansive parks like Hyde Park, Greenwich Park, and Richmond Park. These spaces are perfect for picnics, boating, deer-spotting, or simply escaping the city buzz for a peaceful walk.
- Transportation: Traveling on underground could not be easier. You can simply tap in and out using Apple/Google Pay and Credit/Debit cards when taking the underground or local buses. Both the CMS office and the ITech Law Conference venue are conveniently located in the City of London near large transportation hubs - Cannon Street and Liverpool Street stations respectively. A short ride on the Circle Line connects both stations.
- Day trips: London is ideally located for day trips to charming towns and historic landmarks. Popular choices include Oxford and Cambridge for their stunning university architecture, Windsor Castle for royal history, and Brighton for a seaside escape.
- Cuisine & pub culture: Traditional English cuisine is hearty and comforting—think fish and chips, bangers and mash, or a Sunday roast with Yorkshire pudding. London’s pub culture is alive and well, offering cozy atmospheres, local ales, and a great place to socialise with locals. Check out the pubs in the traditional Smithfields or Leadenhall markets, close to the conference venue.
Not recommended
- Avoid driving in central London – Traffic is heavy, parking is expensive and scarce, and the Congestion Charge adds extra cost; public transport is much more efficient.
- Avoid changing currency at airports or tourist hotspots – These places offer poor exchange rates; use ATMs or reputable currency exchange services in the city. Additionally, London is highly card-friendly, and many places (especially cafes and transport) are cashless, so bring a contactless card or mobile payment option.
- Don’t stand on the left side of escalators, especially in underground stations, stand on the right and walk on the left - locals take this rule very seriously!
- Don’t expect warm weather year-round – London weather is famously unpredictable; always carry a light raincoat or umbrella, especially in autumn.
- Don’t skip booking major attractions in advance – Places like the London Eye, Sky Garden, or Westminster Abbey often sell out or have long queues, so pre-booking saves time and hassle.

Enjoy excellent views of the Thames river, great food and an iconic venue at Skylon, Royal Festival Hall (Skylon | Modern British Brasserie on the Southbank).
Whilst touristy, a walk along the Southbank is always good and offers lots to see and do. I would also recommend crossing the river and exploring Borough Market. If you are feeling less energetic you can always jump on a river boat!
More or less directly opposite CMS’s London office is “London Stone”, an ancient London landmark (LondonStone). Little is known about London Stone and there are many myths including that if London Stone is removed from London, London will fall. Do take a look if you are ever visiting CMS’s London office!
