Stephen Byers, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, has decided, in accordance with the advice of the Director General of Fair Trading, to refer to the Competition Commission the acquisition by Vivendi SA of a material interest in British Sky Broadcasting.
The CC will be looking at concerns in respect of the market for film and sports rights and for conditional access technology in the UK. The CC has been asked to make its report to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry by 25 February 2000, and has asked for evidence by 6th December 1999.
